Achieving high performance building criteria like the German Passive House standard is difficult. Very few people in Colorado know how to achieve a 90% reduction in energy required to heat a home or building. This 4 part training series is intended to be a starting point for that journey.

Over the course of 4 sessions, we will explore 6 key aspects of high performance building. This is an opportunity to not only learn some of the most intricate details of achieving energy efficiency goals to include Passive House standards, but also differentiate yourself from your competition.

High performance homes and buildings are becoming increasingly important for a number of reasons. Most importantly and for their own reasons, we have a growing body of home and building owners interested in pushing the energy efficiency "envelope”. Unfortunately, there is a lot of, perhaps well intentioned, incomplete and inaccurate information out there. Building and home owners need all of us to be as well informed as possible.

Bring an open mind to these sessions. It will be an interactive and hands-on event involving many speakers to include local building practitioners and suppliers. They will share their experiences and information on how construction methodologies are changing. We will cover the following topics and others:

  • Session 1: Overview of high performance building to include the fundamental principles of Passive House or PassivHaus – one of the most rigorous energy efficiency standards in the world.
  • Session 2: Envelope assemblies and window options that achieve excellent thermal performance. This will not only include discussions on different wall assemblies, window options but also key installation considerations.
  • Session 3: Insulation and Air Sealing Techniques that create superior thermal, vapor and air barriers. Over 30% of our heat losses come from air infiltration and a great portion of building failure is ultimately due to poor air sealing.
  • Session 4: Mechanicals design, renewable systems and important installation considerations. High Performance Buildings can be a significant game changer for mechanical and renewable designs.
