On August 31, 2002, officers from the Denver Police Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of East 16th Avenue and Xenia Street. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, James Wrzensinski, inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
