About this Case:
On June 15, 1979, witnesses reported seeing a blue 1970 AMC Rebel reversing fast down Kentucky Drive. The witness had hear a loud blast from a large caliber gun. A bullet had pierced the blue car's front windshield and the witness had looked out the window of her home on West Kentucky Drive when she saw a car spinning wildly in circles before it plowed over the south curb and smashed into stop sign. Witness saw a man walking down the street after the shot was fired. 2 young girls walking on Briarwood Street saw another blue car with a man and small boy stop near the crashed car. The man then sped away. The woman inside the blue wrecked car was identified as Sandra JoAnn Rushing, 18, who was very close to her residence of 908 S. Routt Court. Her poodle Gigi, who was in the car during the crash, made it safely home. The victim was driving her sister's car when she was shot. Her sister was involved in drug distribution and it was initially reported that the suspects were brothers (Lovato Brothers). It is assumed that the victim had seen something that caused her to make a desperate attempt to escape the offender. The victim's mother, Shirley Rushing, had seen the victim's former boyfriend sitting on a lawn in her neighborhood several times in the weeks leading to her death. The ex-boyfriend had been calling the victim and and harassing her and had even apologized over the phone for hurting the victim. He had also been seen throwing trash at the victim's house with his friends. The night before Sandi's death, her and her mother had gone to K-Mart with one of Sandi's male friends. The victim's mother Shirley had been driving, and states they were followed from the parking lot by a car with a broken headlight. Police say that the alibi (victim's ex-boyfriend) was in another town the morning Sandi was shot.
